As Fake News Spreads Lies, More Readers Shrug at the Truth
Larry Laughlin, a retired business owner from Minnesota, said he felt alienated from conventional news media.CreditTim Gruber for The New York TimesHAM LAKE, Minn. — One morning last week, Larry Laughlin, a retired business owner, opened his shiny black Dell laptop and scrolled through Facebook. Most of the posts were ordinary news stories from conservative sites: Donald J. Trump’s deal with the Carrier company. The political tussle over the recount. But a few items were his guilty pleasures. “I like this guy,” said Mr. Laughlin, looking at a post by the conservative commentator and author Mark Dice. Mr. Dice has promoted conspiracy theories that the Jade Helm military training exercise last year was preparation for martial law and that the Sept. 11 attacks were an “inside job.” But Mr. Laughlin likes him for what he said was his humorous political commentary and his sarcastic man-on-the-street interviews. Everyone’s got their goons. Their goons are pushing our guys around, and it’s great to see our goons push back.” Continue reading the main story

Snopes Writers Deciding What's Fake On F

Snopes, which will now have the power to declare what news is or is not legitimate on the world’s largest online platform, almost exclusively employs leftists. Facebook announced Thursday that mythbusting website Snopes will be one of a few fact-checking organizations allowed to label stories as “fake news.”  Mark Zuckerberg, founder and CEO of Facebook. REUTERS/Adnan Abidi/RTR49I8Q  Almost all of the writers churning out fact checks for Snopes have a liberal background, and many of them have expressed contempt for Republican voters. The Daily Caller could not identify a single Snopes fact-checker who comes from a conservative background. Snopes did not respond to a list of questions from TheDC regarding the site’s ideological leaning. At least two of the site’s fact-checkers joined Snopes after writing for Raw Story, a far-left publication that describes itself as a “progressive news site that focuses on stories often ignored in the mainstream media.” Several others have demonstrated liberal partisanship. Snopes managing editor Brooke Binkowski said on Twitter that Brexit supporters were “pandering to racist mouth-breather ‘Britain First’ types.” (RELATED: Snopes Caught Lying About Lack Of American Flags At Democratic Convention) Snopes fact-checker Arturo Garcia is an editor-at-large for Raw Story. Garcia is also a managing editor of Racialicious, a pro-Black Lives Matter blog. One of Garcia’s most recent storiesat Raw Story was titled “The next time your right-wing uncle tries to ruin the holidays with ‘proof’ of creationism, show him these videos.” Back when Trump was reportedly considering launching his own media network, Garcia implied that it would be a TV channel for white people, calling it “White Entertainment Television.” Snopes writer Arturo Garcia shows how he feels about Donald Trump supporters (Screenshot/Twtter) Another Snopes fact-checker, Bethenia Palma Markus, previously wrote for Raw Story and is listed as a “contributing writer” by Truth-Out.org, a left-wing nonprofitworking to “spur the revolution in consciousness and inspire the direct action that is necessary to save the planet and humanity.” Palma Markus has expressed her support for France’s decision to censor advertisements that have models deemed “too skinny.” Snopes fact-checker favors censorship (Screenshot/Twitter) After Boston University professor Saida Grundy was criticized for racist tweets in which she called white, college-aged males a “problem population,” Palmo Markus suggested Grundy’s tweets weren’t actually racist because they were directed at white people. (RELATED: Snopes Caught Lying About Lack Of American Flags At Democratic Convention) Bethenia Palmo Markus defends racist professor Saida Grundy (Screenshot/Twitter) Writer Kim Lacapria has called Republicans “regressive” and afraid of “female agency,” as previously reported by TheDC. She also previously referred to members of the tea party as “Teahadists.” (RELATED: Fact-Checking Snopes: Website’s Political ‘Fact-Checker’ Is Just A Failed Liberal Blogger) Former BuzzFeed science writer Alex Kasprak now works for Snopes, and he has let folks on Twitter know he thinks Trump is a bully and an idiot and compared the New York businessman to Kim Jong Il. Twitter screenshot Another Snopes writer, David Emery, has expressed a clear bias against supporters of Trump and Trump himself. David Emery shows anti-Trump bias (Screenshot/Twitter) Snopes fact-checker stereotypes Donald Trump supporters as angry (Screenshot/Twitter) Just last week, Emery butchered the truth while attempting to fact-check a story from The Daily Caller News Foundation. (RELATED: CAUGHT: Snopes Deliberately Omits Key Details To Protect Kerry’s State Dept) Facebook has been accused of partisanship in the past.
