Cooperative Games and Activities

Cooperative Games and Activities

Cooperative Games      Thefollowing cooperative games and initiative games are designed to requirestudents to work and cooperate with one another, in order to solve aproblem or succeed as a team.    Games in Black Lettering represent games that are Coming Soon  Games in Blue lettering are already listed

Pirate Ball

Pirate Ball

Name of Activity: Pirate Ball Grade Level: 3-5 Equipment Needed: 4 each of 4 types of balls, 4 mats, rope, 4 hula-hoops, flags andbelts.  However, much of thisequipment is not absolutely necessary for this game to be successful. Highlights: running, evading skills, strategy, teamwork, and critical thinking. Instructions: Set up the playing area as follows: Divide the gym into four equal quadrants.  (I use half court line for one direction, and my rope for theother.  However, tape, chalk, cones and such, will also work fine). In the far corner of each quadrant you will build a base. Each base consists of a mat place diagonally across the backcorner.  Behind the mat(inside the small triangle created by the mat placement) place ahula-hoop.  Inside eachhula-hoop should be 1 of each type of ball being used (I use basketballs, volleyballs, soccerballs and footballs).     Divide the class into four equal teams and have each team put onflags and belts.  Each teamshould be designated by it’s own color of flag or pinnies. Each player must begin the game from his or her own home base.  Each team will be given a name that is representative oftheir particular ball (for now we will call them the football team, basketball team, etc.).  Theobject of the game is for each team to collect all of their designatedballs from the opposing teams.  Thefirst team to have gathered all four of their own balls will be declaredthe winner of that round.  Followingare the rules of this game:  Oncea player enters an opposing teams quadrant (pirate ship), he or she issusceptible to having their flag removed. If you have a flag torn off, or fall off while in an opposition’sterritory you must retrieve your flag and go to their dungeon (mat). Once inside the dungeon (on the mat), you must take your flags offand wave them overhead while kneeling. (Note):  Anyplayer from any team can remove the flag of any player who is not insidehis/her own quadrant (ship).  However, the captured player would go to the dungeon (mat) of the team whosequadrant he was in at the time of his capture. If a student successfully makes it into an opposing teams vault(triangle of floor behind the mat) he must rescue one of his/her teammates(to rescue; student must escort his/her teammate, by the hand, all the wayback to their own quadrant).  Inall variations of this game, rescued students and their escort, get a freewalk back to their quadrant as long as the hand joins them. If a player makes it to the opposing teams vault and there areno prisoners from his team to rescue, then he may steal only the treasurethat represents his team.     Following are some other miscellaneous rules that help with thisgame: 1.     Students cannot have their flag removed as long as they are intheir own quadrant. 2.     Players are not allowed inside their own vault unless they arereturning with a piece of treasure (ball). 3.     You may rescue only 1 player at a time. 4.     Players are not allowed on their own mat, this is how I stop thearguments over weather a person was safely in the vault or not when theirflag was removed.  By notallowing players to be on their own mat, and opposing players to be safeif in the vault area, arguments are eliminated because: If a player had his flag removed by an opposing player not on amat, then he must be out because the students are not capable of reachingthe vault without being on the mat. 5.     You may not rescue a player and a ball at the same time. 6.     If a flag falls off in enemy territory then you are out and must goto the dungeon. Anything Goes

NAME OFACTIVITY:  FreeDay; Anything Goes GRADE LEVEL: Grades k-12 EQUIPMENTNEEDED:  Asmuch equipment as you deem safe and necessary. HIGHLIGHTS: About everything that you can think of including, upper body strength, wrestling skills, pull-ups, pegboard, throwing, shooting, decision makingskills, tennis skills, etc.        INSTRUCTIONS:  Freeday is rewarded to my classes upon earning a particular number of starsduring our physical education classes, or by gaining points during the equipment

Mass Basketball

NAME OF ACTIVITY:Mass Basketball GRADE LEVEL:3-12 EQUIPMENT:  5 or 6 sets which include:1basketball, 5 or 6 pinnies, 5 or 6 collectable (flags, beanbags, etc.), 5or 6 basketball goals.  It is nice if each set is color coded, forexample: the blue set would have a blue basketball, 5 or 6 blue vests, bluecollectable (flags, etc).  However, this is not absolutely necessaryin order to enjoy this game.  I started by using different stylebasketballs, bean bags as collectables, and did not have different vest (Iused flags).  I only had 2 different color flags, but I used tape toadd vertical stripes or horizontal stripes, etc. in order to distinguishthe teams.  Be creative. HIGHLIGHTS: Virtually all aspects ofbasketball: dribbling, passing, shooting, rebounding and defense. INSTRUCTIONS:  Divide the class into 5 or6 equal teams.  Each team should have a distinctive basketball, collectable and Jerseys (pinnie) if possible.  The object of the gameis to be the first team to collect a determined number of differentcollectables.  Following are the rules:     Each team will need to have offensive anddefensive players.  I let each team figure this out, but I usuallylet the teams know that in the next game, defenders must be offense andoffense must play defense.  This adds to the strategy of thegame.  On my signal each team must try to earn a One collectable fromeach of the other teams.  The first team to get one collectable fromeach team will be declared the winner.  Following are the rules:     1.  A player earns a collectable from theother teams, by scoring a goal into the opposing team's basket.  Uponscoring, one of the defensemen will give the collectable to the scoringteam.     2.  Upon earning a collectable, the teammust immediately return the collectable to their base. (note: A team mayonly score 1 time at each goal, so they should never have more than onecollectable from each team).     3.  Any player may guard, steal a ball from,or rebound a ball from any team, at any time.  Once a ball is stolen,it must be rolled away immediately.     4.  A team may only score with their ownball.     5.  All dribbling and fouling rules shouldbe followed.  (I do not have penalties for infractions, I just watchand warn)  Personally, I have never had to do more than warn, but youcould allow fouls shots, or make travelers and double dribblers, give theball away.HELPFUL HINTS:For collectables, I have used the following: bean bags, flags and hackysacks.  For this game, you could use about anything, cards, beanies, etc.     To shorten a game, I will just have the studentscollect a fewer number of collectable to win.  I will also, sometimesplay until I get a second and third place winner, this will lengthen thegame.   Home/BirthdayGames/CombativeGames/CooperativeGames/FitnessActivities/HolidayGames/MiscGames/RhythmicGames/SmallSpace Games/Sports& Lead Up/TagGames/Team
